Awarding scholarships to support the financial needs of graduating high-school seniors and community college students
Our Program, The Stephens/T.A. Upshaw Scholarship Foundation is an independent, 501(c) (3) nonprofit whose basic function is to provide scholarships to graduating high-school seniors and community college students. The awards are given to students who demonstrate an interest in higher learning at a four-year college or university, in the field of education. Each scholarship is awarded based on the student’s academic achievement and financial need, as described in the student’s 1-page essay. Students are to maintain a grade-point average of 3.0 or above throughout high school or community college. When scholarships are dispersed to individual students, the expectation is that the student will continue to attend college classes.
Students should submit a scholarship application provided by the Stephens/T.A. Upshaw Scholarship Foundation along with the 1-page essay. High-school seniors should submit a copy of their High School Transcripts as well. A college acceptance letter from an approved university or four-year college and a letter of recommendation from the present school of attendance are also required of the student applicant. Our Board members are very passionate about education, and the foundation awards scholarships to eligible students whose primary residence is within the county of Los Angeles.
In our first ten months of operation, The Stephens/T.A. Upshaw Scholarship Foundation was able to award three scholarships to deserving students from Bellflower High School. The awardees were Rogelio Acosta, Julissa Grano, and Anaiah Grant.
Rogelio will be attending Vanderbilt University, majoring in Human Organization Development and Music. Upon completion of his undergraduate degree, Rogelio plans to attain an Ed.D in Educational Leadership in hopes of becoming a teacher and eventually an administrator.
Julissa’s plan is to attend UC Berkeley, with the goal of becoming an educator at the high-school level.
Anaiah has been accepted to Norfolk State University. Her goal is to become an OBGYN or Emergency Room Doctor.
We celebrate the achievements and dedication of these students, and we congratulate them on being the first recipients of The Stephens/T.A.Upshaw Scholarship Foundation Award.
